Signs your garage door spring is broken
- A loud bang from the garage, like a firecracker, when nobody was using the door.
- The door goes up a few inches and stops, or the opener runs but the door won’t move.
- You can see a gap in the coiled spring on the bar above the door.
- The door is crooked, feels extremely heavy, or slams down fast.
Broken garage door spring repair is the most common call we get, and we keep springs for most residential doors on the truck. Wondering about price? Read what affects spring replacement cost.
Please don’t try to fix a spring yourself
Garage door springs hold enough tension to lift a door that can weigh 150 to 400 pounds. Winding or releasing them without the right tools and training causes serious injuries every year. If you think a spring is broken: unplug the opener, keep people and pets away from the door, and call us.
Torsion vs. extension springs
Torsion springs sit on a metal bar above the door and are used on most newer Palm Beach County homes. Extension springs run along the side tracks and are common on older homes and single-car garages. We service both, and we can convert an older extension system to torsion for a smoother, safer door.
South Florida humidity and salt air make springs rust and fail sooner. We install coated, oil-tempered springs sized to your door’s exact weight, and we offer high-cycle springs that last roughly twice as long as builder-grade ones.
What every spring replacement includes
- Weighing and measuring your door so the new springs match it exactly
- Inspection of cables, drums, bearings, rollers and hinges
- Balance test, lubrication of all moving parts and opener force adjustment
- Safety-reverse test before we leave

Frequently asked questions
How long does garage door spring replacement take?
Most spring replacements take about an hour once we arrive. Two-spring systems and conversions from extension to torsion springs can take a little longer.
Should I replace both springs if only one broke?
If your door has two springs, usually yes. Both springs are the same age and have done the same number of cycles, so the second one tends to break soon after the first. Replacing both also keeps the door balanced.
How long do garage door springs last?
Standard springs are typically rated for about 10,000 open-and-close cycles, which is often 7 to 10 years for a family. High-cycle springs are rated for 20,000 cycles or more. Salt air and humidity can shorten that, so regular lubrication helps.
Can I open my garage door with a broken spring?
We don’t recommend it. Without the spring, the full weight of the door is on you or on the opener, and the door can slam down. If your car is stuck inside, call us for emergency service.
